Over in Hamburg on the Seigle + Gale blog, Ulf-Bruen Drechsel paid homage to the passing of the Sony Walkman.

The passing happened with little pomp and circumstance, as most final chapters do. I found a quick notes at the NYTimes and at Crunch Gear.

Sure, it’s passing of a technology. The audio tapes. The size. The headphones. All pass. But I’ll always remember the Walkman – – and the folks at Sony who created it – for something different. This was a product experience that from the beginning was about solving our need for music on the go. Maybe it was all the guys carrying around boom boxes on their shoulders that sparked the idea at Sony. The rest of us realized we had a yearning for mobile music when Sony showed us a Walkman.

Ulf-Bruen notes:

In the first years of our millennium, In the first years of our millennium, Walkman® was the generic term for mobile musical enjoyment.

Kudos to the Walkman team for staying so true to solving a need. Thanks for never falling into the trap of pushing the product. The passing of the Walkman is a sure and certain sign that technology has evolved. But our need for mobile music is still real. Onward.
