Social CRM strategies and technology offerings should complement, but not replace traditional Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software — the platform businesses have traditionally used to hold and analyze customer data. While many traditional CRM solutions are highly regarded and excellent at automating processes, managing the customer data and provide management reports to track sales, Social CRM focuses on the relevant conversations taking place online and offline. Social CRM not only addresses how you will respond to this new kind of customer and the demands that he or she puts on your company, but also how you can engage non-traditional industry influencers like bloggers, independent analysts and customers who are passionate about brands.

How, when and where your business needs to engage with your customers has changed significantly and rapidly due to the...

Whenever there is a new type of technology, media or fad of any kind everyone hops on  the new wagon. The foolish think just because it’s new, the seat on the new wagon  must be better. They think it will cost less, be easier, bring more customers. It is  normal to look for a solution. To hope that something will fix the issues that keeps you  up at night. It is normal to hope and dream of the day you can go to sleep without  waking up in the middle of the night to solve a problem. Many do the same thing with  social media. They think once they are on Twitter, have a Facebook page, and get  everything automated their business problems will be solved. Sorry to break the news  to you folks but it is simply not how it works.

The reality is that social media will probably highlight these issues even further. It may even shine like a strobe light on the very broken areas of your business. It may put departments, people and even individuals under pressure. Why? Because you will...

When it comes to business – and most importantly social media – measurement is still a vast, ongoing discussion that’s fraught with questions. Many of those questions start at the very beginning: How do I know I’m setting the right goals? As we’ve said many times before, the right goals for you are going to be heavily dependent upon your business. But, what we can talk about are the underlying reasons that most goals exist: to solve a problem.

One of you will undoubtedly point out – and you’d be right – that goals can often be set in order to create or capitalize upon new opportunities. But when you break down that opportunity into it’s pieces, what you’re again left with is a set of problems or challenges that need to be solved in order to put you on the path toward that opportunity. So when we say problem, think in terms of “thing that needs solving” versus a heavily negative connotation. Problems aren’t always bad things.

Google App EngineGoogle App Engine is a platform to deploy and run web applications on Google‟s infrastructure. It comes with a dynamic web server with full support for common web technologies. It offers a transactional data store for persisting data. Developers can integrate their web application with Google Accounts through the APIs. The biggest advantage of running web applications on Google App Engine is the scalability that it offers. Your web application will be as scalable as some of the popular Google services like search.

Google App Engine (GAE) currently supports Python and Java environments. Java developers will be able to deploy and run JSPs and Servlets while Python developers can use standard library. Since GAE runs in a sandbox, not all operations are possible. For...

Although the number of people who own cell phones is similar to last year’s, people use much more of the phones’ capabilities than in 2009. Of all cell phone owners in the study:

    • 54 percent have used their phone to send a photo or video.
    • 23 percent have accessed a social networking site by phone.
    • 20 percent have watched video using the phone.
    • 15 percent have used the phone to post a photo or video online.
    • 11 percent have purchased products using their phone.
    • 11 percent have used texting to make a charitable donation.
    • 10 percent have used their phone to access a status update service such as Twitter.

Not surprisingly, young adults (18-29) are most likely to use more of their phones’ capabilities (95 percent use mobile phones to text, 93 percent use them to take photos, and 20 percent use them to make purchases). But use of mobile capabilities is growing rapidly in the 30-to-49 age demographic. Among this...

    Management

Many investors and lenders feel the quality and experience of the management team is one of the most important factors for evaluating the potential for business success. A good business plan evaluates the skills, experiences, and resources the management team will need. Addressing those needs during implementation will go a long way towards ensuring success.

    Key questions to answer:

    • Who are the key leaders? What are their experiences, educational backgrounds, and skills?
    • Do your key leaders have industry experience? If not, what experience do they bring to the business that is applicable?
    • What duties will each position perform?
    • What salary ranges will be required to attract qualified candidates for each position? What is the salary structure for the company, by position?

Management answers the “Who is in charge?” question.
