I was having a meeting earlier this week with someone I’d never met before. He’d stumbled across my website somehow and decided he wanted to chat me up about doing some writing for some of his clients. Awesome. That was only one aspect of the conversation.

This company happens to be an IT company trying to do social media marketing. This kills me. It pains my heart. I was ranting on Twitter the other day…yes, it happens when a) it’s close to shark week, b) I’ve been in front of my computer too long, or c) I see more idiot people who can’t run their own businesses successfully, decide they’re going to “get into” the “social media marketing” business because someone told them it’s a way they can make money.

    BULLOCKS.

Back to the meeting: This individual shares that he’s having a hard time “selling” social media. (Honestly…at this point, I wanted to slap...

When it comes to content strategy, you’ve heard them all before. You know, the “lines,” the “buzzwords,” that kind of stuff related to us social media nerds.

Examples? “Content is King,” “You must be ‘engaging’ your customers,” blah, blah, blah. As a matter of fact, I’m sure I’ve used lines like this before in my presentation of new media marketing and search engine optimization.

But the reality is that content isn’t king, and who really writes the rules of engagement anyway?

Raidious is a content builder, strategy creator–all things online in one stop. But we’ll get to that in another post. For this one, I want to focus on making … creating.

What’s really so important about creating new stuff for your brand anyway? (Great question!)

There are hundreds of thousands of brands out there. I don’t have a percentage,...

Sounds weird, right? Hmmm. Maybe not too weird.

I’m an emotional being…sometimes too emotional. But as an artist/writer/creative type, I feed off emotion. It paves a way for me. That’s the first point.

Point number two: I’m an entrepreneur…a businesswoman. I help businesses blog and build relationships online. I help teach them how to be real with their audience and help build their audience. That being said, a question that often arises is, “What should my blog be about?”

    My response? Everything.

Now, you may be thinking, “what about target audience?” or “what about business?”
Yes, all that too. The thing is, there really is no right or wrong way to write a blog. And there’s really no ‘this thing’ or ‘that thing’ that it should be about. Sure, if you’re a business, you definitely need a blog about that business, but it doesn’t...

All these blogs have been popping up recently over location-based social media services, and “what’s in it for me?” and “what’s the point?” kinda questions have ensued. Privacy issues, egotism, whatever…stuff like that.

    Really? Who cares?

You know, despite some of the creepers who have recently asked to befriend me on Foursquare (my weapon of choice), I participate in this game for multiple reasons.

    1. I love my community, and by checking into my favorite places, you a) get to see who and what I love and b) get a sense of who I am…in a weird way.

    2. It’s fun. I love the badges. I love the little mini wars I have with my friends, and the friendly smack talk...

Last week, my favorite author/cartoonist, Hugh MacLeod, aka Gaping Void, posted this cartoon.

How appropriate for how I’ve felt lately. Somewhat lost…knowing I need to do something…anything…but have lost motivation. I’m going through some personal development right now…having to give up something I love because it’s not healthy for me. I get so caught up in thinking one way, that it inhibits my thinking in other ways. Does that make sense?

I think all entrepreneurs go through this. Often. And it sucks. We ebb and flow through high times, low times, personal demon times, and times where we feel we can conquer the world. And this goes beyond entrepreneurs. Everyone feels this way regardless of the label you give yourself. The big question is: How do you get unstuck...

I wrote this post for Fusework Studios out of Indianapolis. Check em out.

Video marketing…have you ever thought about it? Or vlogging…aka video blogging?

You know why I love video so much? Because I feel like I “get” the person when I see them talking about what they love or sharing so we can learn. There’s a sense of connection even when there may not be a direct “connection.”

I’ll be honest, I’m a marketer’s dream. You reel me in…I’m yours forever. I’m writing about video for two reasons: 1) I’m enthralled with it right now. 2) I think timing is everything. It just so happens that I was having a conversation with one of my clients out of NYC, yesterday about this very subject matter. Video is enticing and lends a hand in understanding people.

I wrote this as a guest blog post for Delivra. They rock over there. Happy reading.

Sure, we keep hearing it. The whole “buzz” out in the business community that has everyone wanting to know more…and there’s definitely a good reason for it. Social media is becoming one of the fastest growing trends among growing businesses throughout the world. Why is this? Well, first of all, it’s a great way to have conversation with your clients. Not only is it a great way to engage with them, it’s also a great way to nip problems in the bud as they arise. Is this why the percentages of businesses utilizing social media platforms have grown so rapidly? Perhaps. But to a social media marketer (that’d be me), it seems to be the natural progression for marketing integration. Note: Integration.

What makes us decide to “like” something on Facebook or join a group or a cause?

I’ve been receiving all these requests lately and it’s got me thinking about passion…how someone’s passion for/about something can lead to massive movements. But then, what if you get a suggestion from a friend and you don’t share that same passion?  Do you ignore it? Or do you support it?

Passion is tricky….yet powerful and persuasive…in the words of my buddy, Kevin Eikenberry. (I say tricky…he says powerful and persuasive.) I believe it’s all encompassing of those and so many other things.

I kinda feel like I’m the embodiment of passion. I get so excited and all caught up in things moment to moment. It’s quite scary at times…almost as if it’s...

So, I’m not a big one-upper. You all know the types I’m talking about…those people out there that make it more about themselves and being better and getting more than the others around them. The ones who rarely do what they do because they love it. The ones that talk about other people and put others down. The ones who think they’re pretty much better than most. Yeah, you know that person. When I’m around those types, I can literally feel my energy drain…as if a blood-sucking vampire has come to reel me in. I have to regroup. Refocus. Come to understand that it’s okay…I’m different from some people. Not all people, just some.

So, I was hanging out with my band’s attorney the other day and he asked me about using social media to gain insight on what other companies are doing and if I...

Don’t you ever get tired of seeing the typical “social media” blog?

    • 5 things every social media marketer needs to know…
    • 10 things to make you rock on Twitter…
    • 8 social media rules to live by…

    Blah, blah, blah…

It’s all the same. What happened to the real reason why we love social media in the first place? Because there ARE NO RULES! Sure, we all learned some type of etiquette (hopefully) as we grew up…please, thank you, excuse me…all of which are part of being human and communicating in a way that makes other people feel that you’re not all about you. (Some are better at this than others, would you agree?)

I mean, social media isn’t some grand, “need to know the rules” kinda thing, is it? Did I miss that 101 course somewhere? Did I miss THAT blog? Everyone has their own style and take on things. Social media is just...
