At a recent press conference, an SAP executive told me that SAP has surpassed Siebel as the #1 CRM vendor in terms of software license revenue.
Does anyone have independent evidence to support, or refute, this claim?

But most of the fortune 500 listed companies are using Siebel as vendor for the CRM.
e.g Merrill Lynch,GE,GE Medicals Systems,Procter and Gamble.
Then how it can be confirmed that SAP has overpassed the Siebel in #1 CRM vendor?

Every company likes to blow its own trumpet!!!
What one can rely on are only studies by independent organizations like Gartner, etc.
And to know who is the CRM leader, SAP is advised to check any one of them. Smile

As a competitor to SAP, my reply will be somewhat biased. However,SAP rarely competes head to-head with Chordiant in Financial Services, our core market. Even more rare is SAP actually winning a bid in FSS. If we are being totally accurate, our core market has "done CRM" and is evolving to process management and service oriented architectures; what Chordiant really does. I do have evidence to show that SAP bundles its CRM offering with its core offerings, so I don't know how they can count it as revenue, because revenue gets counted only when implemented. I wonder what SAP would say when asked how many companies have actually implemented their CRM, and in which industries? Maybe they are calculating their numbers based on the list price if sold separately.

This is a very difficult claim to verify since SAP does not break out their revenues by product line. It is true however that they have been successful in penetrating their installed base, but I think its time for companies to stop being taken hostage by their vendors and start to look at other options. PeopleSoft for example offers OOTB connectivity with SAP R/3 and in terms of usablity and architecture can easily go head to head with the best.
