Roche recently announced the launch of the Desktop Flu Tracker, which allows users to conveniently and accurately track the appearance and spread of flu in any community in the continental United States.
Touted as "a valuable tool for consumers, medical professionals, caregivers and public health officials," Flu Tracker allows people to monitor flu incidence in their area.
Developed with AdTools Inc., the software application also alerts the user when there is an increased risk in the area, and links directly to expert information on prevention and treatment.
What do you think of such tools?

Hmmmh.
Picture the situation. A pharmaceutical company provides a desktop tool to warn users about the incidence of flu. A viral disease that can kill and that is highly emotionally charged, particularly where there is already a shortage of vaccine in some parts of the US. But the desktop tool can only be downloaded from the website of its own prescription anti-viral drug—Tamiflu. The website itself is a very slick presentation of the benefits of Tamiflu in combatting flu. The message is clear: Quote "So, as soon as you feel the onset of flu symptoms, talk to your doctor within the first 2 days and ask if TAMIFLU is right for you." Unquote.
You will have to decide for yourself whether this really is a public service or just another slick marketing tool.
If you are interested in impartial advice on flu, its incidence in your area and whether you need to be vaccinated, I suggest you visit the website of the US Centres for Disease Control & Prevention website at http://www.cdc.gov/flu/.
