Complete the Survey and Get a Free Pie

These days, almost everywhere I go, waiters, waitresses and checkout clerks point out all the extra writing at the bottom of my receipt. If I call the toll-free number printed there, I'll get a free dessert or I'll be entered in a drawing or I'll get half off my next meal or ... something that I'm not all interested in.

The point of everything is to participate in a survey. And actually, I would like an opportunity to tell management at the various businesses I patronize what I like about the businesses and what I think needs improvement. But I never call because I don't have time; I don't like the come-on; and, more importantly, I'm afraid it will be just like every other survey I take. The company will ask me a series of leading questions meant, obviously, to confirm a direction it's already decided to take. And I'll have no chance to say what I want to say.

So I want to know if these surveys are really worth it. Do you loyalty gurus think companies learn anything productive from them? Or are they really just trying to get my name and information to market to me?
