Smells Like SPAMSmells Like SPAMEmail marketing can help you sell products, create brand awareness, grow your social media following, and even build your credibility as an expert in the industry. For any of those things to happen, though, you have to get recipients to open your emails first.

That’s not always as easy as it sounds. In fact, with customer inboxes becoming crowded, and the time people have for email newsletters getting tighter, lots of businesses are finding that they are struggling to break through spam filters even though they aren’t sending messages about online casinos or low-cost generic drugs.

Usually, this is an issue that can be fixed with a few small adjustments. Here are a handful of easy tips you can follow to stop your email marketing from being flagged as spam and make your campaigns more successful in the process:

Always use a good opt-in list. One easy way to have your email marketing ignored is to send it to the wrong people (who will, in turn, flag it as spam and cause delivery problems for your other messages). The answer, of course, is to only contact people on your list who have opted in specifically to receive messages from you and your company.

Write targeted, non-sensational subject lines. The more “over the top” your email subject lines seem, the more likely they are to be flagged as spam, or simply ignored by recipients. Use an interesting idea or benefit, but don’t go too far or your email will seem less legitimate.

Avoid the wrong “red flag” words. Certain words within the body of your email message (like “free” or “prescription”) will trigger spam detection services. Your email service can help you find them, but it’s a good idea to give your message a quick review for red flag words before you hit “send.”

Make your email messages more presentable. Emails with lots of typos and grammatical errors can be marked because they resemble those that come from overseas marketing firms. And, of course, having lots of basic mistakes in your messages doesn’t do a lot for your credibility, either.

Use the right email delivery service. There are a number of trusted, reputable email delivery services out there that you can use inexpensively. Because Internet service providers “white list” these companies, using them is a good way to ensure that your email reaches its recipient.

Be sure to honor unsubscribe requests. This is something that a good email delivery service can help you do automatically, but it’s critically important that you honor requests to be taken off of your mailing list. Failing to do so can not only get your emails marked as spam, but also open you up to fines and legal penalties.

Few tools that Internet marketers have are as powerful and important as a good email newsletter. Just make sure yours is sent and delivered the right way, or all of your hard work could go to waste.
